Early Forged Goosewing Axe Goose Wing Broad Antique Picture(s) and Description:
This auction is for the one axe described and on the far left of the group picture. Early Goosewing side axe. This is yet another really beautiful example of a 1700's/1800's hand forged/blacksmith made side axe used for hewing and shaping by carpenters and house builders. Edge is 12" and the axe is marked with a backwards "S I" raised letters in a sunken box. It is early and clearly hand forged by a skilled blacksmith. Handle has some age but is not as old as the axe head. It is solid and you could swing it at anything you wish without fear of breaking. Any lines appearing on the axe are forge lines. This axe is solid, usable out of the box and without cracks repairs or other issues. I have owned this axe for about 12 years. It came out of a large goosewing collection in Missouri. I have always liked the exaggerated length of the beard on this tool. The axe shows very well with other tools and is usable if you wish. Reasonable reserve. Good luck.Questions welcome and thank you for looking. More auctions to come.JH
