VILLAGE BLACKSMITH 4″ WOOD TIMBER FRAMING CHISEL SLICK Picture(s) and Description:
This is a Village Blacksmith 4 Inch Wood Timber Framing Chisel Slick in near Mint Condition Village Blacksmith was the line of fine cutting tools made by the Washington Cutlery Company in Watertown, Wisconsin, after moving there from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1906. The company was sold in the early 1950s. This is their mark and style used between WWI and WWII when supplies of quality steel were more available for the auto and other metal industries. This superb Village Blacksmith Wood Chisel Slick is a full original 27 inches in length with a hard-to-find 4-inch-wide heavy Slick blade. The Slick is in near mint condition with factory protective rust coating on the blade and full lacquer finish on the handle and no signs of use. It appears to have been sharpened and lapped and then never put to work. It is their unusual patented "wrapped socket" model that cut manufacturing costs and made changing to a short handle easier. It is hand-forged rather than cast. The handle is secured with a factory screw so that a short handle could be used for tight work. This is only the second Village Blacksmith Slick that I or my tool friends have ever seen, and the first one was well used and abused unlike this mint example. The hand turned hardwood handle is in perfect condition with great uniform wood tone and full lacquer finish. The heavy steel blade has uniform rust preventive finish except for the working area that was sharpened and lapped on the back side. The cutting edge is razor sharp, ready to fine hone and put to work. It is marked "Village Blacksmith" on the top of the blade. A solid Wood Chisel from a rarer American chisel slick maker that really holds an edge for serious woodworking. VIllage Blacksmith Chisels are rated Rockwell Hardness Rc 61-62 Excellent Temper range for excellent use on both hardwoods and softwoods with strong edge-holding ability.
